Let "The October Daily" begin!



Day 1 of The October Daily - Why I blog

Wow, it's already October 1st! It's really amazing how time flies. Today is extra special cause it marks my 23rd birthday! At this point of my life, I believe I still have many things to learn and I have yet to find the career path which is both intellectually and financially rewarding. I'm currently focusing all my efforts on achieving my personal goals and I'm grateful for my family for supporting me along the way. 


So to commemorate my birthday and the whole month of October(obviously my favorite), I decided to participate in this challenge, The October Daily. Thank you Ms. Mary.  :) 


1. I'm rather new to this actual blogging thing, which I started only last September 7th, and the main reason why I decided to join the blogging bandwagon was because I wanted an outlet for my thoughts and interests. I was always a silent reader; visiting countless of blogs and silently wishing I also had one. I was raring to enter the blogosphere but I never really had the opportunity before since school works took most of my time. But now that I just recently graduated, I now have the freedom to do so. Hence, the birth of Wanderlust. It is a beautiful place for writing my thoughts and feelings. 

2. Blogging is a fantastic and ideal way to brush up on my writing skills! I have this penchant for beautifully written articles and I'm always looking for more ways to improve my writing. You see, writing for me is therapeutic.

3. I'm an incredibly sentimental person and I've always loved the notion of keeping something that was created by me so that someday, I will look back upon these works and be utterly proud. 


4. I get to know different types of people and interact with them. I find joy in meeting new and exciting people, be it in person or in cyberspace. Bonus points if we have a lot of things in common! 


5. I'm perpetually inspired by my favorite blogs which is one of the things that keeps me sane nowadays. It gives me some sort of escape from the pesky thing called reality.

The Sunday Currently, vol. 2



Finally! The sun is shining beautifully outside after experiencing frequent rainstorms for weeks. But the weather remains unpredictable really; one moment the sun is shining brightly but come nightfall, it'll start raining again. I dislike rainy days cause it makes the place gloomy and all I want to do is to just coop myself up inside my room all day especially when I have to be out and about. Well, maybe except for those days when I know I'll just stay inside the house, then raining is acceptable for me. So anyway, I think I'm gonna go run later, I'm so loving the weather! :)

R E A D I N G The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. My sister gave me the whole set of Nicholas Sparks novels and I'm so glad cause it'll keep me occupied for weeks to come. Although many people think that whilst the author is a talented and beautiful writer, his books follow the same format. And I have to agree, but being an obsessed book reader and a hopeless romantic, I think I'm gonna enjoy this one!

W R I T I N G  a list of my wardrobe essentials. I seriously need a wardrobe make over, one that is budget-friendly and versatile so I can mix and match with my current pieces. I need to be mindful of my purchases though as I tend to be swayed by fancy looking pieces.

T H I N K I N G about the next anime or manga that I'll devour. My addiction to anime was reignited after Sword Art Online and Attack of Titan

Life | Think, Act, Feel Positive




I think it is very important to have a positive mindset no matter what you're going through in life. There will be times when you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and suddenly it all becomes so unbearable. The answers we seek are nowhere to be found and we are left immobilized by our fears and limitations. But to me these challenges are essential for us to develop a powerful defense against them. It is an essential part of our being, whether we like it or not. As the saying goes, "When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure." Challenges are inevitable. That is reality. Scary as it may seem, you just have to believe in yourself and always remember to see the silver lining in every problem. Be strong and always have faith. I've had my share of negative experiences and that horrible sinking feeling you get every time is an all too familiar feeling to me. There are times when I seriously want to give up but faith, love and optimism helped me immensely. Granted, we may have different experiences but one thing remains the same, it can either make you or break you. It's all up to you.

The point of this post today is to share some inspiring ways that has really been helping me lately to lead a better life. I'm really into self-development and everyday I try to become the best version of myself so hopefully I could inspire you to lead a better life with this. I admit, I'm rather negative most of the time - in my head anyway. I project a positive aura whenever I'm around other people but deep inside my head is full of negative thoughts. So here are helpful tips that you can also incorporate in your everyday life:




+ Pray and have faith. When you believe that God will always be by your side, you will never go astray. All you have to do is open your heart and receive his grace and leave the rest to Him.



+ Surround yourself with positive people and activities. Its so easy to coop up yourself in your comfort zone and shut the people out of your life when you are going through a rough patch but remember this doesn't work. Its okay to be sad for a while but don't get too caught up on your problems to a point that the situation is the one controlling you. Get out there and enjoy yourself and be with the people who genuinely care for you and do activities that you love. Read a book, shop, eat your favorite treats, get a massage, by all means go and spoil yourself. Smile! Love yourself completely and utterly. It's also a good idea to have someone in mind that you idolize for inspiration.

 

+ Exercise. Studies show that there are numerous benefits of regular exercise. Even just a 30 minute walk will do wonders for your mind, body and health. 


  + Stop comparing. "Comparison is the thief of joy" - I repeat this mantra every time I find myself comparing my life to others. Remember you are a unique individual, your life/life progress/life development and career advances are not the same with others so comparing as it is a waste of time, energy and emotions.

 

+ Be bold, brave and never stop learning. I know this takes time but you have to challenge yourself in order to progress. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" - one of my favorite quotes. Empower yourself and then you will find there is so much beauty within you.

 


+ Collect things that inspire you. I love to collect quotes, books about positivity and photographs and I keep them in easily accessible places.Doing so will remind to be strong and have faith and that everything will turn out okay.

Life is never stagnant. It’s not going to flatline at a certain age and continue to be that way for the rest of our lives. It’s going to spike up and it’s going to plummet down, but it’s all a part of the journey.

Book Review | Safe Haven

Honestly, I expected a lot from this even though the author pretty much follows the typical love story with an unusual twist and some sort of tragedy thrown in the mix. Being the hopeless romantic that I am, Nicholas Sparks' novels are a must-read. I found out about this from one of my favorite bloggers saying that it has a good story so I made a mental note to check it out and last week, I had a day off, so I thought why not give this book a try.

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.


Its the kind of story that makes you excited and intrigued about what fate awaits each character therefore, you flip the pages through its completion even if the story is kind of predictable. It actually reminds me of the movie "Sleeping With The Enemy" starring Julia Roberts(which is one of best movies in my opinion). Don't get me wrong though, there are many unexpected surprises and twists in the story which makes it unique. Nicholas Sparks did a great work in injecting his signature suspenseful and appealing style, making it his own.

Although, it doesn't involve many romantic moments between Alex and Katie, it compensates on the equally intriguing story of the other characters wchich gives the story more depth.

A little side note: I especially like the part where Katie and Alex had their first date together. Katie prepared the dinner and she served bacon-wrapped brie with raspberry sauce as a starter and the inner foodie in me came alive. Just the thought of it sounds amazingly delicious so I looked up the recipe on the internet, and I found it here. I'm planning on making some of these on Christmas. :)

Currently addicted to....

Baby Lips Glow in Pink Blast
I heard a lot of raves about the Maybelline Baby Lips for quite some time now and I wanted to know what the hype was all about. So I recently purchased my first Baby Lips Glow in Pink Blast and it did not disappoint! It was love a first swipe! haha Basically, this balm reacts to the pH levels of your lips, it applies clear and changes to a slight pink tint. Before purchasing this, I was visually accosted by Lip Ice Sheer Color which does the same thing so I contemplated a bit on which one to purchase first. In the end, I went with Maybelline. I guess I'll check out Lip Ice some other time. For now, I'm very satisfied with this. :)







Etude House Happy Tea Time Facial Wash in Green Tea
This is my new HG Facial Wash!  I ran out of facial wash(I can't use soap!) last week so I immediately went to the mall to purchase my usual Pond's facial wash but then I decided to stop by Etude House(oh the lure of that baby pink store!).While checking out their products, this particular line of facial wash caught my eye because its inexpensive and the packaging looks neat.I asked which variant is the best seller and they told me Green Tea.This was an impulse buy that I don't regret at all making. It does an impressive job in making my face squeaky clean! 
 I'm planning to buy the other variants after I finish this one but it'll take a long time as there's a lot of product it inside this tube. 



The Face Shop BB Cream Power Perfection
I received some samples of this from TFS after I visited and bought some of their items for a friend of mine. After trying it out, I was amazed at how it instantly made my skin smoother and my blemishes less noticeable. Although, I find it quite hard to spread all over my face(the solution: apply moisturizer first), it does a great job in covering my imperfections. I think I found the perfect BB cream for me. :)
Palmer's Cocoa Butter
I recently discovered this wonderful lotion through my sister who lives abroad. She gifted me with 2 full sizes of these and ever since I tried it, I became totally addicted! It soothes and soften my dry and sensitive skin plus the chocolatey scent is heavenly. I highly recommend this one.







Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
My friend recommended this book to me and I'm almost done with it. I'm planning on re-reading this right after I finish because that's what I always do when I thoroughly enjoy a story. 













My Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
A guide to welcome more happiness in your life! It also includes guidelines on how to start your own Happiness Project. This is such a great book and I recommend this to everyone who wants to improve their outlook in life.














Shingeki no Kyojin
I cannot even begin to describe my addiction to this series! All thanks to my little twin brothers, I'm hooked! From the very 1st episode of this anime up to the latest episode, the action never stops. This anime is mind-boggling, skin tingling, outrageous and incredible!

Book Review | The Perks of Being a Wallflower


After learning that my favorite actress, Emma Watson, played the character Sam, I couldn't stop thinking about this. Luckily, my 16 year old little brother brought the book home for me one day after asking his friend to borrow it. I always prefer to read the book first before watching the movie adaptation as I believe its best to do so. I really enjoyed reading this book and I finished it in a day. Here's a short summary:

Charlie is a freshman.

And while he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it.

Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But he can't stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.

The book is a compilation of letters written by the main character, Charlie, addressed to his anonymous "friend". I think he's referring to the reader as his "friend" as I felt that he was expressing his thoughts and feelings directly to me. He writes about his struggles as a teenager, his family, social life, love interest, and most importantly his thoughts. 
Coming from an Asian country, at first I thought the way the characters behaved were intensely bizarre and outrageous because they were too young for those kinds of things(sex, drugs, wild parties, etc.) I had to remind myself that the book was originally written in 1999 and there's a huge difference from the way teens behave then and of course we're talking about Western culture. It also has many humorous situations which tones down all the seriousness and drama of the story line.
I found myself relating to Charlie's introverted ways because its so me. I prefer spending time alone, both in school and at home, and I'm not so comfortable with social gatherings.  I wish I'd read this during my teens but overall, I think its great and I enjoyed it immensely.

Make-Up Tag



I found this makeup tag while browsing some of my favorite blogs and I love answering questions! Disclaimer: I am not fond of make-up because I don’t know how to use it. I’m more on the skin care area and DIYs… I really enjoy watching youtube videos and if monetary restraints weren't a problem, then I would probably spend more on makeup but for me skin care comes first because if you have good skin, you can get away with minimal make up. 
Here we go…
  1. How many times do you wash your face daily? ——-> Twice a day: upon waking/during bath and upon arriving home/before going to bed.
  2. What skin type do you have? Dry, oily, or combi skin? ——-> I have Normal Skin. 
  3. What is your current facial wash? ——-> Etude House Green Tea. I bought this yesterday and the results are great. Its my new favorite facial wash. :)
  4. Do you exfoliate? How often? ——-> I exfoliate once week.
  5. What product do you use to exfoliate? ——-> St. Ives Apricot Scrub
  6. What moisturizer do you use? ——-> I use Pond's White Beauty Daily Spotless Lightening during the day and I love that it has SPF. Olay Complete Night Cream before going to bed.
  7. Do you have freckles/sun spots? ——-> Nope. I find freckles cute though. :)
  8. Do you use eye cream? ——-> Not yet.
  9. Do you or did you have acne prone skin? ——-> I used to have plenty of acne during my teens but I'm sure glad I'm over that phase, my self-esteem plummeted downwards during that time! Now I only have 2-3 pimples during my cycle.
  10. Did you ever have to use pro-activ? ——-> Nope, maybe my teenage self would've as I literally bought tons of anti-acne solutions back then just to rid myself of pimples but now I'm all good.
  11. What foundation do you use? ——-> I really like using powder foundations, the one with the pink compact from In2it.
  12. How about concealer? ——-> I don’t have a concealer anymore. 
  13. Do you know your undertone color? ——-> Yes, I have a yellowish undertone. 
  14. What do you think of fake eyelashes? ——-> I was only able to use them once during my sister's wedding but its not my thing when it come to everyday wear. I'm good with mascara and curler.
  15. Did you know that you’re supposed to change mascara every 3 months? ——-> Yes, but mine lasts up to a year because I don’t use it often. 
  16. What brand of mascara do you use? ——-> I use Clinique.
  17. Sephora or Mac? ——-> I've heard a lot of raves from Mac, so I'd go for that one but since its kinda expensive(I'm stingy when it comes to make up as I prefer skin care products) I think I'll try it once I have my own job.
  18. Do you have a Mac pro card? ——-> Nope.
  19. What makeup tools do you use in makeup application? ——-> I don't have one...
  20. Do you use makeup base or primer for your eyes? ——-> No. 
  21. For the face? ——-> BB cream is already the primer and foundation.
  22. What is your favorite eyeshadow shade? ——-> I love neutrals...
  23. Do you use pencil or liquid liner? ———> I rarely wear liner because it makes me look mature. I only use them during occasions when I want to amp up my look.
  24. How often do you poke your eyes with an eyeliner pencil? ——-> I used to but not anymore! Practice makes perfect. :)
  25. What do you think of pigment eyeshadows? ——-> I'm not so sure as I prefer to stick to my neutral colored ones.
  26. Do you use mineral makeup? ——-> Nope but I will try someday.
  27. What is your favorite “go-to” lipstick? Why? ——-> Maybelline Mocha! Its my MLBB shade and I love it to bits! I'm not a lipstick person but I'm glad my mom bought it for me because its the perfect shade for my natural look that I always go for.
  28. How about lip gloss? Why? ———> I am happy with just my Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm
  29. What is your favorite blush to use and why? ——-> Maybelline Dream Bouncy blush! Its such a travel friendly blush and I just love the shade!

  31. Do you like drugstore makeup? ———> Yes! I'm frugal when it comes to cosmetics so drugstore make-up is the bomb.

  33. Did you ever consider taking makeup classes? ——-> I used to! But I'd rather invest on actual make-up and practice applying myself. Youtube videos are awesome!
  34. Are you clumsy in putting on makeup? ——-> Sometimes haha
  35. Name a makeup crime that you hate. ——-> 'Clown looking make up' Blush applied too much and wasn't blended properly. 
  36. Do you like colorful shades of makeup or neutral ones? ——-> I prefer neutral ones mainly because I'm into natural looking make-up. I'm also a firm believer that less is more.
  37. Which celebrity always has great makeup? ——-> Emma Watson. I love how she can pull off barely there make up and she still looks absolutely gorgeous.
  38. If you could leave the house using just one makeup item, what would you use? ——-> My BB cream or Olay hint of foundation of course! It’s the best item for lazy people like me. 
  39. Could you ever leave the house without any makeup on? ——-> Actually, I often do. 
  40. In your opinion, what is the best makeup line? ——-> MAC, Shu Uemura, Maybelline and NYX
  41. What do you think of makeup? ——-> Make-up should only be used to improve one’s appearance and not hide imperfections - there’s proper skin care to fight it. But one should never rely too much on make-up. You have to be confident in your own skin.
  42. What is your favorite “quote” related to makeup? ——-> Less is more.
  43. If you were a makeup tool/product, what would you be and why? ——-> I’d be a lip and cheek tint! I'm so into multi-tasking and it makes life more interesting. :)

Book Review | Fault In Our Stars


I've been wanting to read this book ever since I saw the cover from my sister-in-law's IG and she found it really good. The inner bookworm in me immediately searched for a summary online and read a lot of raves from other people.(By the way, if you love books I suggest you check out www.goodreads.com so you can keep track of the books you've read and you can even rank them and they give suggestions too)  I finished this last week and I'd like to share my thoughts about the wonderful that is Fault In Our Stars:

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.


Initially, I thought this book follows the common plot of boy-meets-girl, they fell in love and then something tragic happened but I was in for a great surprise! I never expected this book would be so wonderfully written that I became a  huge John Green fan right after finishing it. Everything about this book: the characters, the plot, the words are brilliant. Also, you can easily relate to the characters and their circumstances - plus there are plenty of quotes which add dramatic flair to the already engaging story. Whenever I find myself completely engrossed in a book to a point that I actually put myself in a character's shoes, that's how I know a book is incredible. And Fault In Our Stars made me feel exactly that. If you want to be inspired to a whole new level, I suggest you give this a try. :)
